Manchester United Receive Major Boost in Pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres as Sporting Eye Replacement

Sporting’s Move for Croatian Striker Franjo Ivanović Could Pave the Way for Swedish Star’s Exit

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Sporting CP’s prolific striker Viktor Gyökeres have been given a significant lift, with the Portuguese giants now actively seeking his replacement ahead of the summer transfer window.

Gyökeres, one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards, has been in sensational form since joining Sporting in 2023, netting an astonishing 97 goals in just 102 appearances. His 39-goal league campaign last season propelled the club to a domestic double, making him a prime target for top clubs across the continent.

However, negotiations over his future have stalled due to disagreements over his valuation, with Sporting reportedly holding out for around £68 million—despite an informal agreement that could allow him to leave for less. Arsenal, initially seen as frontrunners for his signature, have since shifted focus to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško, leaving United in a stronger position.

Now, fresh reports suggest Sporting are preparing for life without Gyökeres by targeting Union Saint-Gilloise’s rising star Franjo Ivanović. The 21-year-old Croatian striker enjoyed a breakout season in Belgium, scoring 20 goals and helping end Union SG’s 90-year title drought.

According to Germanijak.HR, Sporting have already tabled a €20 million (£17 million) bid for Ivanović, though Union SG are holding out for at least €30 million (£25.6 million). The move signals Sporting’s readiness to cash in on Gyökeres, potentially accelerating United’s chances of securing the Swedish striker.

With the new financial year beginning on July 1, United could soon make their move—especially if Ivanović’s arrival in Lisbon gives them the green light to finalize a deal. If Sporting secure a cost-effective replacement, it may even soften their stance on Gyökeres’ price, giving United a crucial advantage in negotiations.

For now, all eyes remain on Ivanović’s next steps—but if Sporting get their man, the path for Gyökeres’ blockbuster switch to Old Trafford could finally open up.
