Manchester United Reportedly Eye Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen as First Signing for New Manager Amorim

United look to bolster their defense under new leadership amid ongoing restructuring

Manchester United have reportedly submitted a bid for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen as they aim to secure Ruben Amorim’s first signing since his anticipated appointment as manager. Amorim, currently the Sporting Lisbon boss, is expected to lead United into a new era under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ leadership.

INEOS initially stuck with Erik ten Hag over the summer, but the Dutch manager was let go last Monday following a string of disappointing performances. With United searching for stability and a return to title contention—a feat they last seriously pursued under Jose Mourinho in 2018—the club is making moves to build a squad capable of competing at the top of the Premier League.

Amorim is reportedly “determined to strengthen his defense” in the upcoming winter transfer window, with Christensen topping his list. The Red Devils are said to have put forward an offer of €15 million (£12.6 million) for the Danish international, a sum that Barcelona’s sporting director Deco may be open to considering in January. With limited appearances this season, Christensen’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain, particularly with the imminent returns of Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia, potentially relegating him further down the lineup.

As United work to assemble a cohesive squad for Amorim, rumors have circulated about additional Sporting Lisbon players, including forward Viktor Gyökeres, possibly following the manager to Old Trafford. However, a report from Portuguese outlet Record on Sunday claimed that Gyökeres has reservations about joining United, citing concerns over the club’s “disorganised, unstable, and permanently volatile” environment.

Despite this, Record suggests that United will likely approach Gyökeres in the near future, possibly after the current season ends. With Amorim known as a keen admirer of the Swedish striker, United may still push to bring him on board as they work to improve their attacking capabilities. However, Gyökeres is reportedly exploring other options, showing some hesitancy toward United’s current project, as it remains under intense scrutiny.

For Manchester United, these potential moves underscore a crucial period of rebuilding as the club seeks to find stability, improve on-field performances, and regain its stature in English football.
