Club Cites High Cost and Shifting Priorities; Eyes Defensive Midfield Reinforcements Instead
Manchester United have ended their reported interest in signing Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer this summer, concluding a potential deal is financially unworkable and not a priority for the squad rebuild.
Speculation had linked the England international with a move to Old Trafford this week, with some reports even suggesting the player was unsettled in London. However, club leadership has determined that the asking price for the Chelsea star is simply beyond their current reach.
Instead of pursuing an attacking midfielder, United’s focus has shifted to other areas of the pitch. The club has already invested heavily in their forward line recently and believes that resources are better spent elsewhere.
A top priority for co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and CEO Omar Berrada is now securing a world-class defensive midfielder to succeed the departing Casemiro. This mission has led their recruitment team to identify several younger targets.
At the top of their list are Crystal Palace’s highly-rated Adam Wharton and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, though the club is wary of the significant fees both players could command.
In a further signal of their shifted strategy, United are also prioritizing securing captain Bruno Fernandes to a new long-term contract, viewing him as the enduring creative heart of the team. The decision on Palmer marks a clear step in a deliberate, and more economical, recruitment plan being charted by Ratcliffe’s new regime.
