Ruud van Nistelrooy named interim manager as club searches for permanent replacement
Manchester United has officially parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday. The decision, led by INEOS’ sporting management, brings an end to Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford after just over two years.
Despite allowing Ten Hag to continue over the October international break, the Red Devils’ leadership acted swiftly after United’s latest setback left the club 14th in the Premier League. Ten Hag departs with United having won only one of their last eight matches across all competitions, an uncharacteristically poor stretch for the club.
The club’s official statement expressed gratitude for Ten Hag’s contributions, including a Carabao Cup win in 2023 and an FA Cup victory in 2024. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” the statement read.
It was also announced that former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching staff, while a search for a permanent manager is underway.
Ten Hag’s stint at United saw mixed fortunes. While he helped foster emerging talents like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, his time was also marked by controversies, including high-profile fallouts with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. In his 128 games in charge, Ten Hag achieved 72 wins, 20 draws, and 36 losses, but he leaves amid what has been the team’s worst-ever Premier League start.
Van Nistelrooy now steps into the role, facing the task of rallying United as they work to salvage a challenging season.
