Chelsea and Napoli Lead the Chase for United’s Homegrown Star as the Club Looks to Balance the Books
Manchester United may part ways with one of their brightest young stars, Alejandro Garnacho, before the transfer deadline if a £60 million offer materializes, according to reports. The 20-year-old winger has drawn significant interest from Chelsea and Napoli, with the London club reportedly gaining the edge in the race for his signature.
The Red Devils are considering offers for first-team players as they seek to raise funds for manager Ruben Amorim to strengthen the squad. Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford has been hampered by limited resources and an underperforming roster. Despite spending over £600 million in under three years to assemble their squad, United are now under pressure to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and Financial Fair Play regulations.
This financial strain has left Amorim with limited options for his rebuild, making the potential sale of a homegrown talent like Garnacho a tempting solution. A product of United’s academy since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020, Garnacho’s departure would be a financial windfall, as it would represent pure profit on the club’s books.
The young Argentine, who has emerged as a key player for United this season, has contributed 23 goals and 14 assists in 119 senior appearances. His memorable opener in last May’s FA Cup final against Manchester City further cemented his reputation. However, reports suggest Garnacho favors a move to Chelsea over Napoli, as he hopes to stay in the Premier League.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, however, played down speculation during a press conference, stating, “I’m happy with the ones we have in this moment. We’ve said many times on the right side, it’s Pedro [Neto] and Noni [Madueke], and the left side is Jadon [Sancho].”
While Chelsea has yet to make an official bid, Garnacho’s potential transfer could significantly impact United’s ability to rebuild under Amorim, making this one of the most closely watched storylines as the transfer deadline approaches.
