Sporting’s Amorim Reportedly Agrees to Join United for €10m as Negotiations Begin with the Portuguese Club
Manchester United are reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, who has quickly emerged as the club’s top candidate to replace Erik ten Hag. According to reports, United won’t need to pay the full €20 million release clause for Amorim due to a “pact” with Sporting CP, which allows him to leave for a European club for half the fee. This arrangement will allow United to secure his services for €10 million instead.
United’s new INEOS leadership team moved quickly to initiate talks with the Portuguese manager after Ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday following the team’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham. Amorim, who has long had an interest in managing in the Premier League, reportedly agreed to personal terms with United without delay.
While the reduced fee marks a significant saving for United, the club will still need to negotiate the terms of Amorim’s exit with Sporting CP, rather than simply triggering his release clause. As Sporting CP is known for its negotiating prowess, discussions could potentially extend over the coming days, even though the general framework of the move is reportedly settled.
In the meantime, United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy will step in as interim manager, leading the team against Leicester City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before their Premier League match against Chelsea on the weekend.
