New Talent Draws Comparisons to Brazil Legend Cafu
Manchester United has made their first signing of the summer by securing 16-year-old right-back James Overy. Reports confirm that the deal is finalized, with official confirmation from the club expected soon. Overy will join as a first-year scholar and start the season with United’s under-18 team.
Overy first showcased his talent at Perth Glory in Australia before moving to England last year, where he impressed while playing for Newton Abbot Spurs’ first team. Manchester United managed to beat out West Ham and Leicester for his signature.
Marc Revell, Overy’s former coach, praised the young player, describing him as an attacking wingback perfect for the modern game, spending most of his time in the opponent’s half. Revell highlighted Overy’s tenacity, skill, and great technique, and noted his polite and humble demeanor. He even compared Overy to Brazilian football legends Cafu and Roberto Carlos.
Born in Australia, Overy is eligible to play for both Australia and England. His signing marks United’s first acquisition in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United’s management, including Erik ten Hag and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are focused on strengthening the squad for the upcoming 2024-25 season. The club is also looking to add a top center-back, a central midfielder, and a more experienced center-forward to their roster.
The past season was challenging for Manchester United, finishing eighth in the Premier League and exiting the Champions League in the group stages. However, they did win the FA Cup, defeating Manchester City 2-1 in the final.
