Offer Rejected as Financial Constraints Pose Challenges for Red Devils
Manchester United has made a joint offer for Bayern Munich’s defensive duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, according to David Ornstein. Following the signing of Leny Yoro for a substantial €62 million to €70 million, United is keen to further strengthen their defense.
De Ligt and Mazraoui have been identified as top targets for the center-back and right-back positions, respectively. Negotiations with De Ligt have been ongoing for weeks, and talks with Mazraoui have recently commenced. Both players are reportedly eager to move to Old Trafford, with personal terms not posing any issues.
The primary obstacle, however, is the financial outlay required to secure both players. Manchester United currently lacks the funds to finalize both signings unless they manage to offload some players. The club is in discussions with West Ham over the transfer of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but no deal has been finalized.
Despite these financial challenges, David Ornstein from The Athletic reports that Manchester United submitted a double offer for De Ligt and Mazraoui on Thursday. While the exact bid amount was not disclosed, Bayern Munich swiftly rejected the proposal.
This rejection reportedly surprised the players, who are represented by super agent Rafa Pimenta, as they believed they were considered surplus to requirements at Bayern and would be allowed to leave. Bayern Munich has informed Manchester United that they will need to significantly improve their offer if they hope to sign the duo.
This comes just weeks after United’s bid for Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite was dismissed as ‘derisory’ by the Toffees. Despite these setbacks, Manchester United remains determined to sign De Ligt and Mazraoui. However, it is clear they must raise additional funds before making a renewed bid. Bayern values De Ligt at over €50 million, while Mazraoui is estimated to be available for €15 million to €20 million.
