Red Devils Eye Nigerian Striker as Ideal No. 9, but Financial Hurdles Loom Large
Manchester United has set its sights on Victor Osimhen as a “dream” signing to bolster their attacking lineup, but securing the Napoli star’s services is proving to be a monumental challenge.
United’s Striker Search Intensifies
The Red Devils’ need for a prolific striker has been evident since the tenure of former manager Erik ten Hag, who openly emphasized the importance of signing a reliable No. 9. Despite acquiring Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in the summer, the Dutch forward has struggled to make a significant impact at Old Trafford.
Now under the leadership of Ruben Amorim, United’s strategy remains unchanged, particularly with the potential departure of Marcus Rashford, a winger who has often filled the center-forward role.
Osimhen: The Dream Target
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Manchester United’s interest in Victor Osimhen is genuine, with the Nigerian striker viewed as the perfect addition to the squad. However, Jacobs cautioned that a January move is unlikely due to financial constraints and Osimhen’s own preferences.
“Victor Osimhen is a Man Utd dream target,” Jacobs said in an interview with The United Stand. “But financially, it’s very difficult even with the release clause dropping to €75 million.”
Osimhen, currently valued as one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, reportedly insists on a permanent transfer, dismissing options like loan deals with purchase clauses.
Financial Barriers and Comparisons
Beyond the €75 million release clause, the financial package required to secure Osimhen, including a reported weekly wage of €250,000, poses a significant challenge for United. Jacobs drew parallels to United’s unsuccessful pursuit of Harry Kane, where financial restrictions and rival negotiations scuttled the deal.
“This situation reminds me of when they wanted Kane,” Jacobs explained. “Idealistically, he was perfect, but practically and financially, it wasn’t feasible. The same hurdles exist with Osimhen.”
A Summer Possibility?
While a January move seems improbable, Manchester United could revisit the deal in the summer, provided Napoli presents a viable package and Osimhen remains open to the transfer. Jacobs hinted that much depends on Napoli’s willingness to negotiate and whether Osimhen reconsiders his stance on temporary arrangements.
For now, the Red Devils will have to assess alternative options to address their striking needs, keeping Osimhen as a potential long-term goal for the squad.
