Manchester United Players Told to Step Up in Captain Fernandes’ Absence

Manager Confident in Depleted Squad, Points to Teenagers Fletcher and Lacey to Step Up

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is striking a defiant tone ahead of Friday’s Boxing Day clash with Newcastle United, despite confirming a crushing injury list that will sideline captain Bruno Fernandes for the entire festive period.

Amorim revealed that midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is also unavailable, while defenders Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt remain out. The most significant loss, however, is Fernandes, who is not expected back until late January with a hamstring injury.

Addressing the team about their captain’s absence, Amorim admitted the challenge is enormous. “It is impossible to replace Bruno,” he said. “We lose everything. He understands every position, he pays attention to every detail, he organises every set-piece.”

Yet, the Portuguese manager insisted his belief in the squad is unshaken. “I am confident we can win any game,” Amorim stated. “Of course, it is more difficult… but I trust in my players. This is a very good opportunity for other guys to step up.”

With the midfield depleted, Amorim hinted that 18-year-old Jack Fletcher, who made his debut in the recent loss to Aston Villa, will see an increased role. He also praised fellow teenager Shea Lacey, saying both academy graduates have shown impressive focus and readiness.

“We need to maybe see different ways of playing,” Amorim explained. “I think Jack Fletcher did a very good job, and that’s why when we have these opportunities, we need to give space to guys like Jack and the other ones. They believe they can play.”

The manager called on experienced players like Lisandro MartĂnez and Luke Shaw to fill the leadership void. “We need to have more leaders to step up because this can happen,” he said, framing the crisis as a chance for the team to grow in their captain’s absence. The visit to St. James’ Park now becomes a major test of that collective resolve.
