Istanbul, November 29, 2023 – Manchester United’s crucial Champions League clash against Galatasaray is facing uncertainty as a pitch inspection is underway due to hours of torrential rain in Istanbul, raising concerns of a possible postponement.
Uefa officials are currently examining the surface at RAMS Park following thunderous downpours on Wednesday afternoon. The Group A showdown is scheduled to kick off at 8:45 pm local time (5:45 pm GMT) this evening.
Earlier in the day, the Uefa Youth League match between Galatasaray and United, held at a different stadium, was played in the midst of the torrential rain. The adverse weather conditions left the pitch sodden, causing the ball to hold up on the surface.
While there is still time for conditions to improve before tonight’s Champions League clash, the prospect of further rain and the pitch becoming waterlogged is looming. Despite the challenges, Uefa officials are currently insisting that the match will proceed as planned, with preparations continuing as usual.
For Manchester United, the stakes are high, as they cannot afford to lose in Turkey. A defeat against Galatasaray, who previously secured a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford, would result in United’s exit from the Champions League.
Erik ten Hag’s side enters the match with improved form, having won their last three games in the Premier League. Their most recent defeat came in a 4-3 loss to Copenhagen following Marcus Rashford’s red card.
United is set to conclude their Champions League group stage campaign against Bayern Munich on matchday six. Bayern Munich currently leads Group A with four wins from four matches, adding to the significance of tonight’s clash for Manchester United.
