United’s potential January signing could indirectly finance Chelsea’s plans for a high-profile striker.
Manchester United may inadvertently fuel Chelsea’s pursuit of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen by bidding for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku in the upcoming January transfer window, according to a recent report from French outlet L’Équipe. New United manager Ruben Amorim reportedly sees Nkunku as an ideal fit for his preferred 3-4-3 system, and the Frenchman is open to the move amid limited playing time at Stamford Bridge.
Nkunku, who joined Chelsea just this summer, has struggled to find a consistent place in manager Enzo Maresca’s lineup, as his style doesn’t align with Maresca’s tactical vision. As a result, Chelsea is reportedly willing to let the 25-year-old depart if the right offer comes in, with hopes of recouping close to the €60 million they originally paid for him. This potential windfall could, in turn, be reinvested in a pursuit of Osimhen.
Chelsea’s interest in Osimhen dates back to the summer transfer window, during which a potential move to Stamford Bridge fell through due to financial complications. Instead, the Nigerian striker joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, with the Turkish club covering his salary until the end of the season. Napoli also included a break clause in Osimhen’s loan deal, allowing them to sell him outright during the January window.
Osimhen’s relationship with Napoli soured last season after the controversial TikTok incident where the club’s social media team posted a mocking video of his penalty miss, straining ties with both the club and its fans. Despite a tough season, Osimhen remains a valuable asset, especially after scoring eight goals in his first nine appearances for Galatasaray. If Chelsea sells Nkunku to United, they could have the funds necessary to make another serious bid for the striker.
As Napoli looks to offload Osimhen after an underwhelming season, Chelsea appears poised to re-enter the race for his signature—potentially with a substantial financial boost courtesy of Manchester United.
