Ruben Amorim Admits Uncertainty Over United’s Woes, Fernandes Calls for Improved Standards
Manchester United’s turbulent season showed no signs of easing as they scraped a 2-2 draw against Everton on Saturday, leaving manager Ruben Amorim and captain Bruno Fernandes to reflect on another underwhelming performance. The Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down after a dismal first half, described as “unforgivable” by club legend Rio Ferdinand, before late goals from Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte salvaged a point.
The match at Goodison Park was a microcosm of United’s struggles this season. A lackluster start saw Everton dominate, with United failing to cope with the intensity of the hosts. The second half brought a glimmer of hope as United rallied, but the late comeback was nearly undone when Ashley Young won a penalty in the dying moments, only for the decision to be controversially overturned.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Amorim dismissed the penalty incident as “soft” but acknowledged his team’s first-half performance was far below par. “If you start the game without the first half, losing 2-0, it’s a good point,” he said. “But we need three points, and to play all the game. The worst part is that we have the free man, we are losing the ball without any pressure. We are not doing what we are supposed to do.”
When pressed on why United’s form has failed to improve since his arrival, the Portuguese manager admitted he was at a loss. “I don’t know. If I knew, I would change it,” he said. “We have to continue to think about the next game. Everything we do in the week, we have to use it in the game. We need to survive this season and then think ahead.”
Captain Bruno Fernandes echoed his manager’s frustrations, criticizing the team’s lack of dynamism and slow start. “We had our chances in the second half, but the problem is we started the game too late,” Fernandes said. “We didn’t have enough movement, we were too static, and it was difficult to create chances. Every time we concede a goal is the only time we start to take risks. We need to start the game like that because we are in a situation where we need to win.”
Fernandes revealed that Amorim’s halftime message was to “stick to the plan,” a directive that sparked a more spirited second-half display. However, the midfielder emphasized that the club’s standards must rise if they are to turn their season around. “This club is all about results, and we know that,” he said. “We need to be aware of the position we are in the table. Everyone has to lift the standards of each other and try to push each other to end the season in the best way possible.”
The draw leaves United languishing in 15th place in the Premier League, just one point above Everton, who have shown signs of improvement under new manager David Moyes. For United, the problems run deeper than a single result, with Amorim and Fernandes both highlighting the need for consistency and a collective effort to reverse their fortunes.
As the season progresses, the pressure continues to mount on Amorim and his squad. With fans growing increasingly impatient, the question remains: can United find the answers to their ever-growing list of problems before it’s too late?
