Ruben Amorim’s side languish in 15th place amid mounting pressure and tactical criticism
Manchester United’s woes continued on Sunday as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, leaving them languishing in 15th place in the Premier League. The loss has sparked fresh scrutiny of manager Ruben Amorim, who took over in November following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, with club legend Gary Neville delivering a scathing assessment of the team’s tactics.
James Maddison’s goal proved decisive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as United’s slide down the table shows no signs of slowing. Injuries have further compounded the club’s struggles, but Neville believes the issues run deeper, pointing the finger at Amorim’s approach.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville did not hold back in his criticism, particularly targeting the team’s midfield structure. “Look at the distance between the two central midfield players. Look at where Casemiro is and where Bruno Fernandes is. That cannot be right. It breaks all the rules in football. Absolute madness,” he said.
Neville also highlighted Fernandes’ unfamiliar role on the right wing, describing the setup as “embarrassing” and suggesting such disorganization would be unacceptable even at youth level. “You wouldn’t see this in under-9s or under-10s football,” he added. “The gaps in that midfield, that’s a tactical thing – they’ve been told to do that. It’s shocking.”
Amorim, who has struggled to implement his style since taking charge, admitted after the match that things are not going as planned. “I have a lot of problems,” he told Sky Sports. “My job is so hard, but I am here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs, and I will try to win again. The place in the table is my worry; I am not worried about me.”

The pressure is mounting on the Portuguese coach as United prepare to face in-form Everton next Saturday. The Toffees, now managed by former United boss David Moyes, have recently climbed above the Red Devils in the standings, adding further urgency to Amorim’s quest for a turnaround.
With the club’s fans growing increasingly frustrated and pundits like Neville questioning the team’s direction, Manchester United’s season is at a crossroads. The upcoming fixtures could prove pivotal in determining whether Amorim can steady the ship or if the club’s struggles will continue to spiral.
