Sesko’s Double Not Enough as Anthony Wonder Strike Denies Fletcher a Winning Start
Manchester United’s first match under interim manager Darren Fletcher ended in familiar frustration as they were held to a 2-2 draw by a spirited Burnley side at Turf Moor on Wednesday, extending their winless run to three games.
The Red Devils, still reeling from the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim, twice came from behind thanks to a clinical double from striker Benjamin Sesko. However, a spectacular late equalizer from Burnley’s Jaidon Anthony snatched away what looked like a hard-fought victory.
“We showed good character to fight back, but we have to see these games out,” said a visibly disappointed Fletcher after the final whistle.
Burnley took a fortunate lead in the first half when a cross deflected off United defender Ayden Heaven and looped over goalkeeper Senne Lammens. United improved after halftime, with Sesko equalizing following a superb pass from Bruno Fernandes before adding a second with a composed volley.
Just as United seemed poised to climb into the top four, Anthony unleashed a stunning strike from the edge of the box in the 78th minute to earn the relegation-threatened Clarets a precious point.
The result leaves United’s Champions League hopes in a precarious position and underscores the size of the task facing the club’s next permanent manager. With games against Wolves, Leeds, and now Burnley all ending in draws, United’s inability to defeat teams in the bottom half of the table continues to haunt their season.
