Mbappé and PSG Wage Dispute Set for Legal Battle After Mediation Rejected

Mbappé Rejects Proposal; Case Likely to Head to Court

The French football league’s legal commission is calling for mediation between Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to resolve a dispute over unpaid wages and bonuses, according to a statement from PSG on Wednesday. The conflict centers around €55 million (approximately $60 million) that Mbappé claims the club owes him, including three months’ wages, a signing bonus, and an “ethical bonus.”

The disagreement surfaced after the French superstar’s free transfer to Real Madrid this summer. PSG and Mbappé’s representatives met with the league’s legal commission in Paris, but the mediation proposal was swiftly rejected by Mbappé’s camp. PSG emphasized that the player had made “clear, repeated public and private commitments” to forgo certain bonuses after deciding not to extend his contract with the club before the 2023-24 season.

The club argues that under an agreement, Mbappé agreed to relinquish bonuses related to his reintegration into the team after being sidelined following his decision not to renew his contract. PSG claims they had been seeking mediation for months to settle the matter amicably.

A representative from Mbappé’s camp, however, confirmed that the idea of mediation had been rejected during the meeting, making a legal battle the likely next step.

The relationship between Mbappé and PSG deteriorated significantly during his final season at the club. After signing the most lucrative contract in PSG’s history in 2022, the World Cup winner grew frustrated when he felt the club failed to deliver on promises to sign key players. Mbappé also reportedly felt misled about the length of his contract, which he thought extended until 2025 but actually ran until 2024, with an option for an additional year.
