Paris Saint-Germain and France star Kylian Mbappe has expressed his belief that he should be considered for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award in 2023, citing his outstanding performances for club and country throughout the year. Despite facing tough competition from players like Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland, who achieved remarkable feats in the 2022-23 season, Mbappe remains optimistic about his chances.
Although Mbappe’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or are deemed unlikely due to the achievements of Messi and Haaland, the French forward had his fair share of memorable moments. He scored a hat-trick in France’s final defeat at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and secured another Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain. In total, Mbappe has netted an impressive 54 goals for both PSG and Les Bleus.
When questioned by TF1 about his eligibility for the coveted title of the world’s best player, Mbappe acknowledged the difficulty of discussing individual accolades. He stated, “It’s always difficult to talk about an individual trophy because you have to put yourself forward. It’s something that doesn’t necessarily go down well with the general public.” However, he firmly believes he meets the criteria of catching the eye, scoring goals, and making an impact, making a strong case for himself. Ultimately, the decision lies in the hands of the voting panel, but Mbappe remains optimistic about his chances.
While Mbappe narrowly missed out on securing a second World Cup victory in 2022 and PSG fell short of their Champions League aspirations, the 24-year-old forward remains positive about the season. Reflecting on the French national team’s journey, he emphasized the significance of the World Cup and the desire to create their own history. Mbappe remarked, “The World Cup, of course. It was special at that time of year. It was a defining moment for everyone. I would have swapped my three goals in the final for an own goal and a victory. We’re competitors, history is for the people who tell it. We want to write it. It was difficult to go past the cup without lifting it.”
The future of Mbappe’s club career remains uncertain, as he has informed PSG that he will not be activating the 12-month extension option in his contract. This decision means that he is set to become a free agent in 2024, putting pressure on the club to consider selling him this summer to secure a sizable transfer fee for his services.
As Mbappe continues to dazzle on the field and the contract saga unfolds, all eyes remain on the young superstar, eagerly awaiting his next move and eagerly anticipating the announcement of the Ballon d’Or winner for 2023.
