Mbappe Demands Urgent Change After Embarrassing Champions League Loss

Star striker calls out team’s inconsistency and pleads for fan support following damaging defeat to Benfica.

A frustrated Kylian Mbappe delivered a stark assessment of Real Madrid’s flaws after a dismal 4-2 loss to Benfica on Wednesday condemned the club to the Champions League play-off round for a second consecutive season.

The defeat in Lisbon marked a disappointing end to the league phase campaign, leaving the star striker searching for answers. Speaking to reporters after the match, Mbappe did not hide his dismay over the performance.

“I have no clear explanation,” Mbappe admitted. “We don’t have continuity in our game. It’s a problem we have to solve. We can’t perform only every other day—this is not what a champion team does.”

He described the overall display as “terrible” and labelled the nature of the defeat as “a bit embarrassing,” particularly after showing promise in recent fixtures. “Last week we played good games, but not now. We have to find that consistency,” he insisted.

Mbappe believes the issues run deep, beyond simple attitude or tactics. “We lack a little bit of everything,” he explained. “It’s a general issue. In the Champions League, every detail is important. If you don’t come with everything to win a game, this happens.”

With the setback meaning Real Madrid will not have a free February to regroup, the focus now turns to domestic action. The team faces Rayo Vallecano at the Bernabeu on Sunday, and Mbappe issued a direct plea to the club’s supporters.

“I ask the Bernabeu to come with the desire to support the team,” he said. “We are not eliminated from Europe, and in La Liga we are in a good dynamic. If the Bernabeu is with us, we will play a good game on Sunday.”
