Mbappé Finds His Flow in Madrid

The French superstar credits his move to Spain with clearing his head, as his blistering goal-scoring form for both club and country makes headlines.

Kylian Mbappé is playing with a clear mind and a renewed sense of freedom, and the results are speaking for themselves. The French striker has opened up about how his high-profile move to Real Madrid has been a breath of fresh air, helping him rediscover his best form on the pitch.

After a blockbuster transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, the 26-year-old has hit the ground running in his second season in the Spanish capital. With a stunning 16 goals in just 14 appearances for both Real Madrid and the French national team, he has only failed to score in one match this campaign—a stark contrast to last year when it took him until mid-January to reach the same tally.

So, what’s the secret to his success? Mbappé points to a calmer lifestyle away from the intense spotlight of his homeland.

“I’ve adapted well to Madrid; I’m a little more relaxed there,” Mbappé shared with reporters ahead of France’s World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan. He was quick to clarify, “This isn’t an attack on France. The lifestyle is different, it’s less hectic than in Paris. I’ve managed to get my head and legs back in place.”

His refreshed mindset is paying dividends for the national team as well. Last month, a penalty against Iceland saw him surpass legendary striker Thierry Henry to become France’s second-all-time top scorer with 52 goals. Now, only Olivier Giroud’s record of 57 is in his sights.

While the record is inevitable, Mbappé insists his focus is firmly on the team’s immediate goal: securing qualification for the World Cup.

“I think I’m going to break the record. When, I don’t know, I don’t think about it,” he said. “Maybe tomorrow, maybe in a long time. The most important thing is to qualify… I’ll be happy when it happens, and I’ll move on.”

He warned his teammates not to take their upcoming opponents lightly, noting, “This is a team that held Ukraine to a draw, so we cannot mess around. The stakes are higher than scoring goals.”

Head coach Didier Deschamps echoed his star player’s call for focus. Emphasizing respect for their opponents, Deschamps stated, “We mustn’t give them the opportunity to have dangerous situations against us. In football, it doesn’t take much; I don’t want to leave room for chance.”

For now, a relaxed and prolific Mbappé seems to be leaving very little to chance at all.
