Mbappé Joins France Despite Ankle Injury

While the captain will report for duty with a sprain, teammate Valverde will stay in Madrid after a challenging week.

Real Madrid faces a nervous international break as a series of injuries and fitness concerns affect key players heading off to represent their countries. According to ESPN sources, star forward Kylian Mbappé will join the French national team despite suffering a mild ankle sprain in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Villarreal.

The decision means Mbappé, who is France’s captain, will now be assessed by the national team’s medical staff. They will determine whether he can remain with the squad for their upcoming matches or must return to Madrid for a safer recovery.

The injury occurred just two minutes after Mbappé scored Madrid’s third goal, a strike that extended his personal record to nine consecutive games scoring for both club and country. “Right now he has some discomfort,” manager Xabi Alonso said after the match. “We hope it isn’t serious, but right now we can’t say anything.”

In a contrasting scenario, midfielder Federico Valverde will not travel to join Uruguay. The decision, reached in agreement with national team coach Marcelo Bielsa, comes after a difficult week for Valverde, who was forced to publicly deny claims he refused to play out of position before being deployed at right-back against Villarreal.

The break also sees young talent Franco Mastantuono joining Argentina for evaluation on a minor hamstring strain, while a significant contingent of Madrid players have departed for international duty, leaving a smaller group to train at Valdebebas.
