Mbappé Returns to Madrid for Ankle Scan, Withdraws From France Squad

The star striker, who just sealed France’s World Cup place with a two-goal performance, is sidelined with a lingering ankle issue.

Just a day after firing France to the 2026 World Cup with a brilliant two-goal performance, Kylian Mbappé has been ruled out of the team’s next match and is returning to Spain for medical assessment. The French Football Federation announced on Friday that the 26-year-old forward has withdrawn from the squad due to his injured ankle.

The decision, made jointly by France manager Didier Deschamps and Real Madrid’s medical team, was prompted by the ankle remaining swollen and painful. The issue is a lingering one that has bothered the player “for some time,” according to the federation. He will undergo scans in Madrid later today.

Mbappé’s withdrawal casts a shadow over his milestone night. In the 3-0 victory over Ukraine in Paris on Thursday, he not only secured France’s qualification but also racked up the 400th goal of his career.

The news compounds a minor injury crisis for Real Madrid on international duty, coming shortly after it was confirmed that midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has also left the French camp with a minor muscle issue.

All eyes will now be on the scan results, with Real Madrid scheduled to play Elche on November 23rd before a Champions League trip to face Olympiacos on November 26th.
