The French captain, in stellar form for Real Madrid, will miss the upcoming World Cup qualifier after being injured in the win over Azerbaijan.
In a blow to the French national team, captain and star striker Kylian Mbappe has been ruled out of Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Iceland after picking up an ankle injury.
The French Football Federation (FFF) announced the news on Saturday, confirming the 26-year-old sustained a right ankle injury late in his team’s 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan on Friday. After a standout performance where he scored one goal and set up another, Mbappe was hurt in the 83rd minute of the match.
The federation stated that national coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed Mbappe’s withdrawal from the squad. In a decision that will reassure his club, Real Madrid, the FFF added that the forward “has been made available to his club and will not be replaced,” meaning France will not call up a substitute player.
This setback comes while Mbappe is in scintillating form, having netted 14 goals in just 10 appearances for his new club this season. Despite his absence, France will still travel to Reykjavik with confidence, leading Group D with a perfect record of nine points from three matches. They will face an Icelandic side currently sitting in third place.
