French Star Could Miss Key Matches for Up to Three Weeks, Leaving Madrid’s Title Chase in Jeopardy
Real Madrid’s hopes for the new year have been dealt a significant blow after star forward Kylian Mbappe was diagnosed with a left knee sprain, putting him at risk of missing several crucial matches.
The club confirmed the injury in a brief statement on Tuesday, saying Mbappe is “awaiting evolution.” While Madrid did not provide a timeline, a source close to the player told AFP the 27-year-old is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks.
The injury casts major doubt over Mbappe’s availability for Sunday’s La Liga return against Real Betis—a match vital to Madrid’s hopes of closing a four-point gap to leaders Barcelona. He is also likely to miss the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atlético Madrid on January 8, a league fixture against Levante, and a marquee Champions League clash with his former club, Monaco.
“It’s a huge setback, no question,” said one club insider. “He’s been our difference-maker.”
Mbappe has been in spectacular form, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year in 2025. His performances have often carried the team during a challenging season and relieved pressure on manager Xabi Alonso.
Now, with their talisman sidelined, Real Madrid must navigate a packed fixture list without the man who has been their most reliable source of goals. How the team responds could define their season in both domestic and European competition.
