Garcia Duo Shines as Los Blancos Edge Dortmund 3-2 in Thriller Despite Late Red Card Drama
In a pulsating encounter at the MetLife Stadium, Real Madrid booked their place in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund, thanks to a moment of magic from Kylian Mbappe.
The Spanish giants looked in control for much of the match after first-half goals from Gonzalo Garcia and Fran Garcia put them firmly in the driver’s seat. But Dortmund refused to go quietly, setting up a frantic finale that saw late drama, a stunning Mbappe scissor-kick, a red card, and a missed chance to force extra time.
Madrid struck early, with Gonzalo Garcia—once again preferred over Mbappe in the starting lineup—coolly slotting home Arda Guler’s pinpoint cross just 10 minutes in. The lead doubled shortly after as Trent Alexander-Arnold fizzed a low ball across the box, leaving Fran Garcia with a simple tap-in at the far post.
For most of the match, Los Blancos seemed destined for a comfortable win—until stoppage time turned the game on its head. Maximilian Beier reignited Dortmund’s hopes with a clinical finish past Thibaut Courtois in the 92nd minute, only for Mbappe to steal the spotlight moments later. The French superstar connected perfectly with Guler’s looping cross, executing a breathtaking acrobatic volley to restore Madrid’s two-goal cushion.
But the drama wasn’t over. Dortmund were handed a lifeline when Dean Huijsen hauled down Serhou Guirassy in the box, earning a straight red card and conceding a penalty. Guirassy calmly converted, setting up a nervy finale. Marcel Sabitzer nearly completed the comeback with a last-gasp volley, but Courtois stood tall to deny him and secure Madrid’s spot in the semi-finals.
Next up, Carlo Ancelotti’s men will face Paris Saint-Germain in what promises to be another blockbuster clash, with Mbappe set to take center stage once again.
