London witnessed the football elite gathering on Monday evening for The Best FIFA Football Awards 2023, where Lionel Messi was crowned the best male player in the world, adding another prestigious accolade to his illustrious career.
The glittering awards ceremony saw the football world’s finest players vying for recognition, with the shortlist for the best male player category narrowed down to Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe.
Messi, a standout candidate for the 2023 Ballon d’Or, secured his place in football history, with his triumph at the World Cup with Argentina in December 2022 playing a pivotal role. The criteria for The Best FIFA Award, however, required voters to assess nominees based on their performances between December 19, 2022 (the day after the World Cup final) and August 20, 2023.
A diverse panel of national team captains, journalists, coaches, and fans cast their votes through FIFA’s website, intensifying the competition for the coveted prize.
While Messi secured the fan and national team captains’ votes, journalists and coaches favored Haaland. The two football maestros found themselves tied on overall points, but Messi clinched the top spot by winning the tie-breaker, earning the most first-choice selections.
The 2022 FIFA winner and reigning Ballon d’Or holder continued his stellar form, clinching the Ligue 1 title with PSG before making a move to MLS side Inter Miami. In an extraordinary debut month at the club, Messi almost single-handedly secured Miami’s first-ever trophy, scoring an impressive 10 goals in seven games during the inaugural Leagues Cup triumph.
Haaland, who enjoyed a record-breaking 2022/23 season with Manchester City, accumulated an impressive list of achievements during the judging period, securing victories in the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup. The Norwegian striker showcased his goal-scoring prowess with 28 goals across all competitions.
Kylian Mbappe, while unfortunate not to clinch The Best or Ballon d’Or awards, demonstrated his prowess during the judging period. The Paris Saint-Germain star led his team to a Ligue 1 title and secured the golden boot for the fifth consecutive season, further solidifying his status among the footballing elite.
