Despite Love for Catalonia, Messi Keeps Distance from Barça’s Current Leadership, Eyes Miami Future
Lionel Messi’s future may still include Barcelona—but only as a home, not a club. The Inter Miami superstar is reportedly close to signing a major new contract with the MLS side, shutting the door on any imminent return to Camp Nou.
According to Sport, Messi has no intention of reuniting with Barcelona while the current administration remains in charge. His relationship with club president Joan Laporta is described as “cold and distant,” with no talks planned—not even for a potential tribute match.
Instead, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is focused on extending his stay in Miami. Negotiations with David Beckham’s Inter Miami are progressing smoothly, with Messi expected to commit until at least 2026—ensuring he’ll still be playing when the next World Cup arrives.
For Beckham’s side, keeping Messi has become an “obsession,” a testament to his enduring star power. But while his career unfolds in the U.S., his heart remains tied to Barcelona. The Argentine plans to return to Catalonia after retirement, a place he holds “enormous affection” for.
However, a curveball looms: MLS’s planned switch to a European-style calendar in 2027 could complicate contracts, including Messi’s. For now, though, one thing is clear—Barcelona may be his home, but Miami is his future.
