The transfer plans of both Barcelona and Arsenal have been dealt a setback by Mesut Ozil’s intervention in the potential signing of Turkish midfielder Arda Guler this summer. Guler, a talented 18-year-old, has attracted interest from top European clubs following his impressive performances for Fenerbahce. However, Ozil, who has reportedly spoken with Guler, has urged the young talent to remain in the Turkish Super Lig for at least another year.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Ozil has advised Guler that staying at Fenerbahce would be the best decision for his development. With 35 appearances for the first team last season, Ozil believes Guler’s playing time could significantly decrease if he chooses to leave the club during the current transfer window. Despite Barcelona expressing strong interest in the young midfielder, concrete negotiations have yet to commence. Meanwhile, Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, are also considered frontrunners in the race for Guler’s signature.
During the 2022/23 campaign, Guler showcased his talent by scoring six goals and providing seven assists across all competitions, attracting attention from clubs across Europe. Ozil, in order to ensure Guler continues to have regular playing time, has emphasized the importance of staying in Turkey and rejecting offers from both Barcelona and Arsenal, the two clubs reportedly most keen on acquiring him this summer.
However, despite Ozil’s efforts, Barcelona remains determined to secure Guler’s services. Barcelona chief Deco recently traveled to Turkey for discussions regarding a potential transfer, but the club’s financial constraints present a challenge. Even Barcelona president Joan Laporta admitted in an interview with Mundo Deportivo that the young midfielder is attracting interest from numerous big clubs in Europe, including Barcelona.
While Barcelona seems to be leading the race for Guler’s signature and actively pursuing the talented teenager, Arsenal’s focus lies on finalizing deals for Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber. Nonetheless, the Gunners reportedly maintain an interest in Guler, although Ozil’s persuasive words may temporarily stall any potential move to the Emirates.
As the transfer saga unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Guler will heed Ozil’s advice or be swayed by the allure of joining a prestigious club like Barcelona or Arsenal. The young midfielder’s future hangs in the balance, with both clubs eagerly vying for his signature and Ozil’s intervention adding an intriguing twist to the story.
