Reds Struggle to Secure Deal as Salah Hints at Likely Departure
Liverpool’s efforts to secure a new contract for star forward Mohamed Salah have reached a critical juncture, with the Egyptian international hinting that his time at Anfield could be nearing its end. Amid reports of stalled negotiations, former Premier League midfielder Craig Burley has weighed in, claiming Salah is “holding Liverpool to a huge ransom.”
Salah, whose current contract expires this summer, has been in scintillating form this season, contributing 18 goals and 13 assists in just 19 Premier League matches. Despite his impact, the 31-year-old’s future remains uncertain, as Liverpool hesitates to offer a long-term deal to players over 30, especially those commanding high wages.
The saga has intensified, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly extending an offer to Salah now that he is free to negotiate with foreign clubs. Speaking to Sky Sports last week, Salah acknowledged the uncertainty, admitting that there has been little progress in talks with Liverpool.
“So far, yes, it’s the last six months,” Salah said. “There is no progress there. We are far away from any progress. If this is the last six months, I want to look back and say I had an unbelievable season. That’s what is in my head.”
The contract impasse has sparked criticism, with Burley suggesting Salah’s demands are putting Liverpool in a tough financial position. Speaking to ESPN, Burley said, “The Liverpool executives – they’re lying on the floor at the moment. They’re almost in tears because they’ve probably made this guy the most magnificent offer, and he is screwing them to the ground.”
Burley added, “He’s holding Liverpool to a huge ransom at this moment. It’s a very difficult scenario financially.”
Salah’s remarkable performances this season have only added to the pressure on Liverpool to meet his terms, but the club faces a challenging balancing act between rewarding his contributions and maintaining their financial strategy.
As Salah’s future remains unresolved, Liverpool must decide whether to break tradition and offer a lucrative long-term deal or prepare for life without one of their brightest stars. For now, fans and club officials alike are left waiting, hoping for a resolution before the curtain falls on a pivotal season.
