The Reds’ star forward calls for respect after a fan’s social media post dismisses the contributions of departed champions.
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has publicly chastised a fan-led social media post that celebrated the club’s new signings by disrespecting the players who helped deliver last season’s Premier League title.
The controversy began when a popular Liverpool fan account, @AnfieldEdition, posted a graphic comparing new arrivals Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz to departed forwards Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. The caption, “Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history,” did not sit well with the squad’s leader.
Salah quickly responded on social media platform X, writing: “How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the PL champions?” His rebuke served as a powerful defense of his former teammates, both of whom played significant roles in the club’s recent success. Diaz contributed 13 league goals, while Nunez added five during the championship campaign.
The exchange comes on the heels of a monumental summer for the club. Liverpool shattered the British transfer record by signing striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £130 million, making him the third most expensive player of all time. This followed the high-profile £116 million acquisition of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, part of a staggering £400 million+ spending spree that also saw several key players sold for significant fees.
Despite the massive squad overhaul, the atmosphere at the club remains focused on unity and respect for recent history. New signing Isak echoed this sentiment upon his arrival, stating, “I want to win trophies… I feel like this is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level.”
With three wins from their opening three games and a strengthened squad, Liverpool are already tipped to challenge for back-to-back titles. But as Salah’s intervention makes clear, the club’s success is built not just on new signings, but on respecting the contributions of those who came before.
