Egyptian forward shines with goal and two assists, but remains tight-lipped on future at Anfield
Mohamed Salah has revealed he is still “far away” from agreeing on a contract extension with Liverpool, despite his brilliant performance in the Reds’ 5-0 demolition of West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Salah, who scored Liverpool’s third goal of the afternoon, also provided two assists—one for Cody Gakpo and another for Diogo Jota—as Jurgen Klopp’s side moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League. Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold were also on the scoresheet as Liverpool continued their impressive title charge.
However, after the match, Salah was asked about his contract situation, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season. The 32-year-old made it clear that no progress had been made on a potential extension.
“No, we are far away from that [signing a new deal],” Salah told Sky Sports. “But again, I don’t want to put something in the media and then people start saying stuff. Nothing really moved on, but I am focused with the team, and hopefully we will win the Premier League.”
The Egyptian forward had previously admitted in an interview last November that he feels “more out than in” regarding a new contract offer from the club. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Salah is keen to keep his attention on the pitch, where he has been in sensational form.
This season, Salah has scored 17 league goals and provided 13 assists, making him one of the most prolific players in Europe. His departure would be a huge blow for Liverpool, and the club’s supporters are hoping for a resolution to his contract situation sooner rather than later.
For now, Salah is focused on achieving success with the team, prioritizing the Premier League title over personal accolades.
“I am glad about the result, we managed to score the goal early,” Salah said after the victory. “We dominated the game very well, and that is the most important thing. We also managed to score a few goals.”
He added, “The only thing on my mind is that I want Liverpool to win the league, and I want to be part of that. That is the only thing I have been focused on since the beginning of the season. I will do my best for my team to win the trophy, and we are heading in the right direction. But of course, there are teams that are trying to catch up with us.”
Salah’s commitment to the team is clear, even as he expressed some frustration with missed opportunities during the game: “I am just trying to enjoy the game. To be fair, I was a bit frustrated by a few chances that I missed today. At the end of the day, I came here for the result. I want the team to win, and I want to do something in the game. I’m glad I did, but I’m always hungry for more.”
Arne Slot, the manager of Feyenoord, who has been closely following Salah’s form, believes the Liverpool forward is in the conversation for the title of the world’s best player.
“If you look at his numbers, you could argue that Salah is the best player in the world,” Slot said. “There are different players playing in different leagues who have a lot of quality. But if you look at his numbers, and today, he could have scored even more. I also liked his work rate for the team without the ball, so yeah, he is in a very good place. Let’s hope he can stay like this for a long time.”
As Salah continues to shine for Liverpool, all eyes will be on how his contract situation unfolds, but for now, the focus remains firmly on the pitch, with Salah eager to lead his team to Premier League glory.
