Anfield Legend Reflects on Legacy and Future Amid Stellar Season
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has dropped his strongest hint yet that he could be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. The 32-year-old Egyptian forward, who has been instrumental in Liverpool’s pursuit of a historic Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup treble this season, opened up about his future and how he hopes to be remembered by the Anfield faithful.
With just three months remaining on his current deal, Salah is now free to negotiate with foreign clubs. When asked about progress on a new contract, the winger smiled and responded with a cryptic, “In a very polite way!” before reflecting on his time at the club.
“I want fans to remember that I gave it all to the fans, I gave it all to the city,” Salah said. “I was here, I wasn’t lazy, I just enjoyed my football and gave it all. I think that’s what the city is about—they give you love, and you have a connection with them because you give your all. I just want them to remember that I was here for eight years—and I gave it all.”
Salah, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 for £36.5 million, has become a club legend during his tenure. This season alone, he has netted 30 goals and provided 21 assists across all competitions, maintaining the incredible form that has seen him help Liverpool secure the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. His individual accolades include double Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year and Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year awards.
Despite his ongoing contributions on the pitch, Liverpool have yet to agree on a new deal with Salah. The situation is further complicated by the fact that key teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also approaching the end of their contracts. Salah’s potential departure would be a significant blow to the club, not only for his on-field brilliance but also for his leadership and influence off the pitch.
In a heartfelt interview with former Liverpool midfielder Steven McManaman for TNT Sport, Salah revealed how he has embraced a mentorship role within the squad, guiding younger players and fostering a sense of unity. “You are not going to win the league alone, so you want other players around you to perform,” he explained. “That’s what I’ve been doing for the last few months—studying the games to understand what the other players like. In the past, when I was younger, I would just focus on myself on the pitch. Now, I try to understand how the players feel so they can express their feelings and just be honest with me.”
Salah described himself as a “father figure” to the younger members of Arne Slot’s squad, offering advice and support in both casual and professional settings. “I speak to them in the (coffee) bar and also in the gym. If someone is annoyed, they know I’m not going to snitch to the manager, so they can express their feelings about the manager or themselves. I’m there to do the dirty jobs for the manager!”
As the season reaches its climax, Salah remains focused on delivering more silverware for Liverpool. However, his comments have left fans wondering if this could be the final chapter of his storied Anfield career. For now, the Egyptian King continues to shine, leaving an indelible mark on the club and its supporters.
