Liverpool’s Star Forward Takes Temporary Break from Africa Cup of Nations Due to Muscle Injury
In a significant development, Liverpool’s Egyptian sensation, Mohamed Salah, is set to depart the Africa Cup of Nations temporarily for treatment on a troubling muscle injury, as announced by his Premier League club on Sunday.
Salah, an influential forward for both Egypt and Liverpool, was forced to exit the field during the first half of Egypt’s intense 2-2 draw against Ghana in Thursday’s Africa Cup group match, sparking concerns for both club and country.
The 31-year-old, who has been a key figure in Egypt’s campaign, is confirmed to miss the Pharaohs’ next two fixtures in the tournament, provided they progress to the knockout stages in the Ivory Coast.
Despite this setback, Salah is expected to attend Egypt’s crucial final Group B game against Cape Verde on Monday. A victory in this match would secure their spot in the last 16. Following the game, Salah will then make his way back to Liverpool for rehabilitation on his muscle injury.
Liverpool shared a statement from the Egyptian Football Association on their official website, which explained the decision: “After additional examinations were conducted on Mohamed Salah during the last hours, and after communication between the national team´s medical staff and his counterpart at Liverpool FC, it was decided that the player will return to England after the Cape Verde match tomorrow to complete his treatment, with the hope that he will join the national team in the semi-final of the AFCON if we qualify.”
Expressing his determination earlier on Sunday, Salah stated, “I am still convinced I will finally win the Africa Cup sooner or later.” Egypt, yet to secure a victory in the Africa Cup with two draws, currently stands second in the group to Cape Verde. The top two teams in each group are guaranteed advancement, adding an air of uncertainty to Egypt’s journey in the tournament. Salah’s absence from the crucial stages of the Africa Cup raises questions about the Pharaohs’ prospects as they seek continental glory.
