Mourinho Denies Portugal Rumors But Admits January Exit Talks with Fenerbahce

Veteran Manager Rules Out National Team Move While Hinting at Future Club Ambitions

Jose Mourinho has publicly dismissed speculation linking him to the Portugal national team job but revealed he considered leaving Fenerbahce midway through last season. The 62-year-old manager, whose future in Turkey has been uncertain after failing to deliver the Super Lig title, addressed swirling rumors in a candid press conference.

“Yes, I can deny that I had any meeting with the Portuguese Football Federation. I am a loyal person,” Mourinho told reporters, shutting down claims he was in talks to replace Roberto Martinez after the UEFA Nations League.

However, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss admitted he explored an exit from Fenerbahce in January. “The only time I had direct contact with a club, I informed Fenerbahce,” he said. “It wasn’t now—it was in January. I had a meeting with the [unnamed] club but didn’t accept the offer. Still, I was transparent with my club from the start.”

Mourinho has long expressed a desire to return to England before retiring, though Premier League opportunities appear slim. With Ruben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou more prominently linked to potential summer moves, a third stint at Manchester United or Tottenham seems improbable.

Meanwhile, Scottish giants Rangers have emerged as a surprise potential destination, with Mourinho reportedly among candidates alongside Steven Gerrard and Russell Martin. As the managerial carousel spins, one thing is clear: Mourinho’s next move remains as unpredictable as ever.
