Respected Businessman Turns Down Key Role Amid Questions Over Government Appointments
In a surprising move that has raised eyebrows in political circles, Muhammed Babangida, son of former military leader General Ibrahim Babangida, has declined his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA). The decision deals a notable setback to President Bola Tinubu’s economic agenda, particularly in the critical agricultural sector.
A Gracious Decline with Political Ripples
In a formal letter dated 21 July 2025, Babangida expressed his “sincere gratitude” for the appointment but cited “personal and professional considerations” for his inability to accept the role.
“After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment,” he wrote to President Tinubu. “This decision was not made lightly… [and] would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands.”
Despite his refusal, Babangida reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s administration, stating he remains committed to Nigeria’s development in other capacities.

Why This Matters
The rejection is seen as a credibility blow to the Tinubu government, which has faced criticism over controversial appointments and policy rollouts. The BOA plays a pivotal role in financing Nigeria’s agricultural sector—a key pillar of Tinubu’s economic revival plan.
Analysts suggest Babangida’s refusal could signal deeper discontent within Nigeria’s elite circles, with some questioning whether qualified appointees are being sidelined for political reasons. Others speculate whether internal disagreements over the bank’s direction influenced his decision.
What’s Next?
With Babangida stepping aside, the presidency must now scramble for a replacement—preferably someone with both financial expertise and political trust—to steer the BOA at a time when food security and agribusiness financing are top national priorities.
For now, the question lingers: Was this a personal choice, or a sign of growing skepticism toward Tinubu’s leadership? One thing is certain—the administration can ill afford more high-profile rejections.
