Magistrate Court Absolves Singer and Associates, Nurse and Friend Face Charges for Negligence
A Magistrate Court in the Sabo area of Yaba, Lagos State, has cleared popular singer Azeez Fashola, widely known as Naira Marley, and three others of any involvement in the controversial death of fellow artist Aloba Oladimeji Ileri-Oluwa, popularly known as Mohbad. The ruling, delivered on Tuesday by Magistrate Ejiro Kubenje, was based on legal advice from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), which found no evidence linking the defendants to Mohbad’s death.
Also acquitted were music promoter Samson Balogun Eletu, known as Sam Larry; Owodunni Ibrahim, alias Primeboy; and Mohbad’s former manager, Opere Babatunde. The court held that, based on police investigations and attached evidence, the four men had no case to answer regarding the singer’s death.
However, the DPP’s legal advice implicated auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who treated Mohbad before his death, and one of the late singer’s friends, Ayobami Sadiq. The Lagos State Commissioner of Justice is set to prosecute the duo for reckless and negligent conduct under Section 251 (e) of the Criminal Law, Chapter C.17, Volume 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Mohbad, a rising star in Nigeria’s music industry, died on September 12, 2023, under circumstances that sparked widespread public outcry and speculation. The state government had initially charged all the defendants on October 6, 2024, over their alleged involvement in the case.
While the court’s decision brings relief to Naira Marley and the other acquitted individuals, the case has highlighted concerns over the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death. The prosecution of the nurse and Mohbad’s friend is expected to shed more light on the events leading to the tragic incident, as the Lagos State government seeks justice for the late singer.
The ruling marks a significant development in a case that has gripped the nation, but questions remain as the legal process continues for those still facing charges.
