Sweden coach hails “game-changer” striker and backs his mentality, despite the player’s exile from his club and unresolved future.
In a bold move, Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has called up Alexander Isak for crucial World Cup qualifiers, even as the striker remains in exile at Newcastle United amidst a bitter transfer standoff.
Isak, at the heart of the Premier League’s most dramatic summer saga, has not played or trained with the Newcastle first team this season. The rift became public last week when the player used social media to accuse the club of breaking promises about allowing him to leave, amid strong interest from Liverpool.
Despite the “imperfect situation,” Tomasson, a former Newcastle striker himself, has placed his faith in Isak’s quality and character. “We all know that, but he’s very professional and with his quality he can be a game-changer for us,” Tomasson said at a squad announcement press conference. He acknowledged the 25-year-old is not match-fit, stating, “Can he play 90 minutes? No, of course not. Not at all.”
The call-up means Isak is scheduled to report for national team duty in Stockholm on Monday—transfer deadline day—potentially while his club future hangs in the balance. He has been training away from the senior squad and was not involved in Newcastle’s first two Premier League matches.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is currently planning without his star forward, indicating an imminent resolution—likely a sale—is expected before the window slams shut.
