Former Red Devils midfielder fires back at Onana’s bold claims ahead of Europa League clash with Lyon
As Manchester United prepare to face Lyon in a crucial Europa League showdown, tensions have flared off the pitch thanks to some fiery words from a familiar face. Nemanja Matic, now plying his trade at Lyon, didn’t hold back when asked about United’s current No.1, Andre Onana.
Speaking in a pre-match press conference, the former United midfielder was visibly unimpressed by Onana’s recent comments that the Red Devils are “way better” than their French opponents. Matic fired back with a brutally honest critique:
“Onana said they’re way better than us? When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care what you’re talking about,” Matic said.
“If it was Van der Sar, Schmeichel, or De Gea saying that, okay. But Onana? He’s one of the worst.”
Onana, who signed from Inter Milan for an initial £43.8 million, has had a rocky debut season at Old Trafford. Despite playing every minute in the Premier League and registering nine clean sheets — trailing only Crystal Palace’s Mats Sels (13) and Arsenal’s David Raya (11) — the 29-year-old’s performances have drawn mixed reviews from fans and pundits alike.
His confidence, however, remains intact. Speaking earlier this week, Onana had expressed strong belief in his squad’s superiority over Lyon:
“It’s not our best season, but we still have something big to win, so we will go for it,” he said.
“I think we are better than them. We just have to go there and show who we are.”
Matic, known for his calm demeanor during his time at United, appeared anything but that when responding. His comments suggest there’s more than just footballing pride on the line in this tie — there’s history, rivalry, and perhaps a point to prove.
The stage is now set for a fiery contest, both on and off the field, as Lyon host United in what promises to be a high-stakes Europa League battle.
