Amorim Reportedly Urges €50M Bid for Young Midfielder Despite Contract Challenges
Manchester United’s new manager Ruben Amorim is setting ambitious goals for his January transfer window, reportedly instructing Sir Jim Ratcliffe to launch a €50 million bid for Barcelona’s talented young midfielder, Fermin Lopez. Amorim, known for his preferred 3-4-3 formation, appears eager to add Lopez, 21, as his first signing at Old Trafford.
According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Amorim has specifically requested an offer for Lopez, a versatile midfielder with the ability to play both centrally and on the wings. Though Lopez has only had limited time on the field in La Liga this season, he’s made an impression in the Champions League, contributing a goal and two assists in just 93 minutes of play. However, with regular starting opportunities elusive, the young star may be open to considering a move if his playing time doesn’t increase in the coming weeks.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta might entertain offers if manager Hansi Flick doesn’t see Lopez as indispensable. Despite these factors, a transfer could be challenging: Lopez recently signed a contract extension with Barcelona, binding him to the club until 2029. The deal includes a significant salary increase and a release clause of €500 million, giving Barcelona full control over his future.
Further complicating United’s pursuit, Lopez expressed his commitment to staying with Barcelona long-term. “I’m so happy to stay at Barca until 2029, and I hope even beyond that,” he said in recent remarks quoted by Fabrizio Romano. “It was impossible to predict this a year ago, and I hope to stay at Barca for many, many years.”
With United’s ambitious bid on the table, only time will tell if Amorim’s push for Lopez will come to fruition or if the young midfielder’s loyalty to Barcelona holds firm.
