Swedish striker’s unusual solo session fuels exit speculation after Reds’ £110m bid
Newcastle United have taken the extraordinary step of having Alexander Isak train separately from the first-team squad, PA news agency can reveal, as uncertainty grows over the striker’s future following Liverpool’s £110 million pursuit.
The 25-year-old Sweden international, who missed Newcastle’s preseason tour to Asia last week citing a minor thigh injury, was instructed to report to the club’s Benton training base on Wednesday afternoon – several hours after his teammates had completed their session and left the facility.
This unusual arrangement comes after:
• Liverpool’s formal £110m bid last week
• Isak training with former club Real Sociedad during the Asia tour
• The striker informing Newcastle he wants to consider his options
• The club rejecting Liverpool’s approach but leaving door ajar for improved offers
A source close to the situation told PA: “Having a key player train alone is never routine. It suggests there are conversations happening behind the scenes about his future.”
While manager Eddie Howe has publicly insisted Isak isn’t for sale, Financial Fair Play pressures could force Newcastle’s hand if Liverpool return with an improved bid – especially if the Magpies can secure a replacement. The striker’s 21 goals last season made him the club’s most potent attacking threat.
With the squad now back from South Korea and preparing for their final preseason fixtures, all eyes will be on whether Isak rejoins group training or if his isolation signals an impending departure from Tyneside.
