German Tactician Set to Lead Team in Upcoming AFCON Qualifiers
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed German coach Bruno Labbadia as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s Senior Men’s National Team. The announcement was made early Tuesday by NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, following the approval of the NFF Executive Committee.
Dr. Sanusi stated, “The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect.”
Born on February 8, 1966, in Darmstadt, Germany, Labbadia brings a wealth of experience to the role, both as a former player and as a coach. His playing career saw him feature for clubs such as Darmstadt 98, Hamburger SV, FC Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich, FC Cologne, Werder Bremen, Arminia Bielefeld, and Karlsruher SC. Notably, he was part of the Bayern Munich team that won the German Bundesliga in 1994.
As a coach, Labbadia has managed several prominent teams, including Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV, and Bayer Leverkusen. He holds a UEFA Pro License and is only the sixth German to lead the Super Eagles, following in the footsteps of Karl-Heinz Marotzke, Gottlieb Göller, Manfred Höner, Berti Vogts, and Gernot Rohr.
Labbadia’s immediate challenge will be to guide the Super Eagles through their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. Nigeria is set to face Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7, in Uyo, and Rwanda on Tuesday, September 10, in Kigali. These matches are crucial as the Super Eagles aim to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON tournament, with four additional qualifiers scheduled for October and November.
Labbadia’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Super Eagles as they look to reclaim their status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses under his guidance.
