Nice Stars Moffi and Boga Attacked by Own Fans After Defeat, Placed on Medical Leave

Club and players’ union condemn “unacceptable” violence as police investigate shocking assault following team’s sixth straight loss.

In a disturbing incident that has shocked French football, OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi and teammate Jérémie Boga were violently assaulted by a section of their own club’s supporters on Sunday night. Both players have been placed on mandatory sick leave due to the physical and psychological trauma, and have filed police complaints.

The attack unfolded in the hours after Nice’s 3-1 loss to Lorient, a result that sealed a dismal run of six consecutive defeats. An estimated 400 fans, some reportedly intoxicated, gathered at the club’s training centre to confront the returning team bus.

What began as a tense exchange escalated into a physical attack the moment players disembarked. According to Eurosport, both Moffi, who played the full match, and substitute Boga were punched, kicked, and subjected to racist abuse. Security was overwhelmed in the chaos, which also saw sporting director Florian Maurice assaulted. Teammates, including goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf, helped usher the targeted players to safety.

Medical assessments on Monday confirmed the severity of the ordeal. Moffi has been signed off work until Sunday, while Boga received a medical leave certificate for at least five days, with the club citing the “physical and psychological impact” of the attack.

In an official statement, OGC Nice expressed understanding for fan frustration but condemned the violence “in the strongest possible terms,” offering full support to the affected players. The French players’ union (UNFP) also issued a stern condemnation, stressing that “the physical and psychological integrity of those who make football is non-negotiable.”

The police investigation is ongoing, marking one of the darkest chapters in the recent history of the Sir Jim Ratcliffe-owned club.
