Nico Williams and Luis Díaz Want to Join Barcelona – Deco Confirms

Barcelona Sporting Director Reveals Winger Targets as Club Faces Financial Hurdles

Barcelona sporting director Deco has made a significant revelation about the club’s transfer plans, confirming that both Nico Williams and Luis Díaz are eager to join the Catalan giants this summer.

“Nico and other players have shown a desire to come,” Deco told La Vanguardia. “If Nico’s circumstances arise, then we are going to try. The most important thing is that players like Nico or Luis Díaz want to come – they’re good people who are hungry to succeed.”

Nico Williams

The admission comes as Barcelona prioritize signing a top-class winger, with Athletic Bilbao’s Williams emerging as their primary target. The 22-year-old Spanish international has already agreed personal terms and reportedly rejected interest from Arsenal in favor of a Camp Nou move.

However, significant obstacles remain. Athletic Bilbao are demanding Barcelona pay Williams’ €58 million release clause in one lump sum rather than installments – a tough ask for the financially-strapped club. Additionally, Barça must clear salary space to register any new signings, putting several first-team players at risk of being sold.

Deco outlined the complex negotiation process: “First you talk to his agent, then about contractual situations, then see if his club requires the clause or is open to negotiating. We’ve met with his agent to understand what the player wants.”

While Williams appears the preferred option, Liverpool’s Díaz remains a viable alternative. The Colombian winger has also expressed interest in joining Barcelona, though no formal negotiations have been reported yet.

The situation mirrors last summer’s failed pursuit of Williams, when Barcelona’s financial limitations prevented a deal. This time, with the player’s strong desire to join and personal terms agreed, the pressure is on Barcelona’s hierarchy to find solutions to their economic constraints.

Williams, who scored 11 goals in 43 appearances last season, is considered one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers. His potential arrival would provide much-needed dynamism to Barcelona’s attack as they look to rebuild under new manager Hansi Flick.

As the transfer window heats up, Deco’s comments have set the stage for what could become one of the summer’s most intriguing sagas – if Barcelona can overcome their financial hurdles to secure their top targets.
