Under-Fire Super Eagles Boss to Hold “Decisive Talks” with FA After Tournament
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has confirmed his future with the national team will be decided in critical talks with the football federation after the Africa Cup of Nations, acknowledging the intense pressure he faces but vowing his focus is solely on Tuesday’s opening match.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Monday, the Malian tactician addressed swirling speculation about his job security, which has mounted following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With the Super Eagles expected to contend for the AFCON title, Chelle’s tenure is widely seen as hinging on a deep tournament run.
“Since I took this job my life with the team is maybe after this game, it is finished,” Chelle said candidly. “I am only focused on the game, my players, and my officials.”
He stressed that discussions about his contract would wait until the tournament concludes. “After the AFCON, for sure, we would have a meeting with my FA, we would talk about everything,” he stated. “This is not the moment to answer your question. I prefer to answer questions about the game, the tournament, the players.”
With Nigeria set to begin their campaign against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium, Chelle emphasized the importance of a strong start. “We stay focused on the first game because this is the most important game right now,” he said. “To come into this tournament, to show our ambition, and after we will have the time to talk about everything.”
A positive performance and result are seen as vital not only for Nigeria’s title aspirations but also for stabilizing Chelle’s position as manager. The embattled coach is hoping a successful tournament will strengthen his hand in the decisive talks that await him in Morocco.
