Nigeria Cruise Past Mozambique 4-0 to Reach AFCON Quarterfinals

Lookman Shines with Goal and Two Assists as Super Eagles End Mambas’ Historic Run

Nigeria delivered a commanding performance on Monday, overwhelming tournament debutants Mozambique 4-0 to secure their place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals and edge closer to a first title since 2013.

The Super Eagles extinguished the feel-good story of Mozambique, who were competing in their first-ever AFCON knockout match, with a ruthless display of attacking football. Winger Ademola Lookman was the standout, scoring the opener and providing two assists in a man-of-the-match performance.

“We are building momentum and playing with confidence,” said Nigeria coach Eric Chelle. “The players executed the plan perfectly today.”

Lookman broke the deadlock after 20 minutes with a precise finish into the top corner, his third goal of the tournament. He turned provider just five minutes later, setting up Victor Osimhen for a simple tap-in to double the lead.

Osimhen added his second shortly after halftime, again from a Lookman assist, before striker Akor Adams capped the scoring with a brilliant solo effort, cutting inside and firing into the top corner.

The victory equals Nigeria’s biggest-ever AFCON win and marks the first time they have won their opening four matches at the tournament. For Mozambique, the dream run ends, but their historic journey to the knockout stages will be remembered.

“We are sad it’s over, but we made our nation proud,” said Mozambique coach Chiquinho Conde. “We faced one of the best teams in Africa and learned a lot.”

Nigeria now awaits the winner of Tuesday’s clash between Algeria and DR Congo, with their sights firmly set on a deep run in Morocco.
