Super Eagles Target Quarterfinal Berth Against Debutant Underdogs in Morocco Showdown
Nigeria will look to continue their flawless Africa Cup of Nations campaign on Monday night when they face a historic Mozambique side in the Round of 16, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake in Morocco.
The Super Eagles, three-time AFCON champions, enter the match as strong favorites after winning all three of their group-stage matches. However, they face a Mozambique team riding a wave of emotion, having qualified for the knockout stage for the very first time in their history.
“We respect every opponent, but our focus is on continuing our momentum,” Nigeria coach Eric Chelle said ahead of the clash. “This tournament is about moments, and we must be ready.”
Mozambique’s journey has already captured hearts. A crucial victory over Gabon secured their passage as one of the best third-placed teams, and coach Chiquinho Conde now hopes to mastermind one of the tournament’s great upsets.
“We are making history with every step,” Conde said. “We will play with courage and heart.”
History favors Nigeria, who won the only previous AFCON meeting between the sides 3-0 in 2010. Mozambique have also traditionally struggled against West African opponents, failing to win in nine previous encounters.
Nigeria are expected to field a strong side led by Victor Osimhen in attack, while Mozambique will rely on the energy of Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo and the experience of defender Reinildo Mandava.
The match kicks off at 8 PM West African Time on Monday, January 5, 2026, and will be broadcast on SuperSport, AfroSport, NTA, and beIN Sports. For Mozambique, it’s a chance to extend a dream run. For Nigeria, it’s the next step on the path to a fourth continental crown.
