Super Eagles Have Scored 14 Goals in Morocco, Just Two Shy of All-Time Tournament High
With two games remaining at the Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria have their sights set on a historic milestone: becoming the highest-scoring team in a single edition of the tournament.
The Super Eagles’ 2-0 quarterfinal win over Algeria on Saturday brought their goal tally to 14 in just five matches, leaving them just two shy of the record 16 goals set by Ivory Coast in 2008.
“We are playing with confidence and freedom in attack,” said Nigeria coach Éric Chelle, whose team has showcased one of the most potent offenses in recent AFCON memory. “The players are executing the plan brilliantly.”
The scoring has been spread across the squad, with Victor Osimhen (4 goals) and Ademola Lookman (3) leading the way, supported by contributions from Akor Adams, Raphael Onyedika, and others. This balanced threat has made Nigeria exceptionally difficult to contain.
Next up is a semifinal showdown on Wednesday against host nation Morocco, who have conceded only twice in the tournament. A place in the final—and a shot at history—is on the line.
“Morocco is a strong team, and there will be pressure,” Chelle acknowledged. “The best team will win. I am proud that we will face them.”
If Nigeria advances, they could break the record in either the final or the third-place playoff. Standing in their way is an Ivorian benchmark that has stood for 18 years—a challenge this free-scoring Nigerian side is eager to embrace.
