West African Boxing Community Mourns Sudden Loss of Light-Heavyweight Champion
The boxing world was left in shock Saturday night when former Nigerian and West African light-heavyweight champion Segun “Success” Olanrewaju collapsed during a professional bout in Ghana and later passed away. The tragic incident occurred during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at Accra’s famed Bukom Boxing Arena, where the 32-year-old fighter was competing against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu.
A Fight Cut Short
Eyewitnesses reported Olanrewaju was leading on points when he suddenly lost consciousness in the ring. Disturbing footage circulating on social media shows the moment the champion boxer collapsed, with medical staff rushing to his aid. Despite their efforts, the Nigerian pugilist could not be revived.
“This is a devastating loss for African boxing,” said Ghana Boxing Authority spokesperson Sammy Heywood Okine. “Segun wasn’t just a champion – he was an ambassador for the sport across West Africa.“
Remembering a Champion’s Legacy
Olanrewaju’s career highlights included:

Fellow boxers flooded social media with tributes, remembering Olanrewaju as both a fierce competitor and generous mentor to younger fighters. His sudden passing comes just months after announcing plans to open a boxing academy in Lagos.
