Nigerian Epic Mai Martaba Selected for 97th Academy Awards Submission

Hausa-Language Film on Power and Leadership Chosen as Nigeria’s Official Entry for International Feature Category

The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has officially submitted the historical epic Mai Martaba as Nigeria’s contender for the International Feature Film category at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards. Directed and produced by Prince Daniel, Mai Martaba presents an evocative tale set in an ancient African kingdom, capturing complex themes of power, love, greed, and betrayal while celebrating female leadership and the transformative strength of inclusive governance.

Chosen for its powerful storytelling and high visual appeal, the NOSC described Mai Martaba as a film that embodies the significance of diverse voices in leadership. The committee, led by award-winning actress and NOSC Chair Stephanie Linus, includes industry veterans such as Dr. Victor Okhai, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Andy Amenechi, Yibo Koko, Izu Ojukwu, Emem Isong, Ali Nuhu, and Kene Okwuosa. After a thorough selection process, Mai Martaba earned the highest votes from the 15-member panel.

Filmed in Daura, Katsina State, Mai Martaba brings to life the era of a bustling trade boom facilitated by the Trans-Saharan exchange—an era that saw an intense power struggle within the Agadashawa ruling clan. The film, which has already been screened in Nigerian theaters, was also nominated for the Septimius Awards in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2, 2025, will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where Mai Martaba has a chance to represent Nigeria on the global stage, with the event broadcast live across over 200 territories worldwide.
