Music Icons Celebrate Big Wins, Cementing Their Global Legacy
Nigerian music sensations Wizkid and Davido brought their A-game to the 56th NAACP Image Awards, walking away with major honors over two star-studded nights in 2025. The prestigious event, which celebrates brilliance across film, TV, theater, music, and literature, saw the duo solidify their places as global heavyweights—and gave fans back home plenty to cheer about.
Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Balogun, scooped up the Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (Contemporary) award for his soulful track Piece of My Heart alongside Brent Faiyaz. It’s his sixth NAACP Image Award—a record for any Nigerian artist—and a testament to his enduring magic. Meanwhile, Davido, born David Adeleke, clinched the Outstanding International Song prize for Hmmm, his irresistible collab with Chris Brown, edging out Wizkid in a friendly rivalry that lit up the category.
The wins were bittersweet for Nigeria, though. Other homegrown talents like Tems and Burna Boy, despite their nominations, didn’t take home trophies this time. Still, Wizkid and Davido’s victories underscored the unstoppable rise of Afrobeats on the world stage.
The awards weren’t just a Nigerian affair. Beyoncé dazzled as Outstanding Female Artist and nabbed Outstanding Album for Cowboy Carter, proving she’s still a force of nature. Chris Brown, Davido’s collaborator, was named Outstanding Male Artist, while Kendrick Lamar’s fiery Not Like Us claimed Outstanding Hip-Hop/Rap Song. The night was a love letter to music’s power to connect and inspire.
Beyond the beats, the NAACP honored screen legends too. Samuel L. Jackson delivered a knockout performance to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, with Taraji P. Henson earning the Supporting Actress nod for the same show. Jamie Foxx had the crowd in stitches, taking Outstanding Variety Show for his special What Had Happened Was…, while Gracie’s Corner won hearts as Outstanding Children’s Program.
For Wizkid, 34, and Davido, 32, these awards are more than shiny statues—they’re milestones in journeys that started on the streets of Lagos and now echo worldwide. Wizkid’s smooth vibes and Davido’s infectious energy have turned them into household names, and their latest triumphs only fuel the fire. As one fan put it online, “Naija to the world—and they’re just getting started.”
