Club Owner Criticizes Medical Staff’s Decision to Let Him Play On
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has woken up from an induced coma following emergency surgery for an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s Premier League match against Leicester City.
The 26-year-old Nigerian forward collided with a goalpost while attempting to score from a cross by teammate Anthony Elanga in the closing stages of the game. Despite receiving treatment on the pitch, Awoniyi was allowed to play the final minutes—a decision that has since sparked controversy.
After the match, he underwent urgent surgery on Monday and was placed in a medically induced coma before a second procedure on Wednesday. Fortunately, he was brought out of the coma later that evening, with hopes now turning to his recovery.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed frustration over the handling of the incident, calling it a “misjudgement” by the medical team.
“Everyone—the coaching staff, players, fans, and myself—was upset about Taiwo’s injury and the medical staff’s error in allowing him to keep playing,” Marinakis said in a statement.
The club has not yet provided further updates on Awoniyi’s condition, but supporters and teammates are rallying behind him as he begins his road to recovery.
